Our 2013 Napa Cab is a real beauty. Perfumed, almost feminine notes of strawberry and raspberry tart dance on the edge of the glass with darker cassis, black cherry and vanilla adding layers to the nose and hinting at the beast within. On the entry, volumes of supple bright cherry, plum and blueberry pie rush to the fore and linger well into the mid-palate. As the tannins begin to wash over and meld with the bright fruit notes, soft secondary flavors of milk chocolate and pie crust coat the palate and provide harmonious balance through the finish. This wine shows great promise and speaks well for 2013 as a year with great aging potential. While 2012 was a bombastic show stopper, 2013 will prove to be the nuanced genius plucking the right strings for years to come.
Patience is a virtue, but then again, who needs virtue when great wine is waiting. Drink when you are ready, decant with vigor over the next 5 years and confidently enjoy to 2030.
2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford AVA Brinkman Block
Our 2013 is beautifully layered, showcasing a powerful, abundant nose of blueberry compote, blackberry and black cherry, with an added dimension of rose petal, chocolate ganache and a hint of graham cracker crust bringing to mind both strength and elegance. On the palate, blackberry and dark cherry notes are immediate and welcoming, leading to soft acidity and graceful touches of vanilla and cocoa dust. The finish showcases fine-grained, satisfyingly open tannins which linger pleasantly on the palate mingling with the rich fruit notes for several minutes.
This wine is a classic example of location, winemaker and vintage all working together in harmony. It is a joy to experience and is completely at ease in its youth, though this is absolutely a wine to treasure. The quality heralds an exciting future, enjoy a bottle while young to appreciate its energy and then hold and enjoy from 2020 to 2030 if you can muster the inner fortitude for such patience.
